Fast Logger: Locations

The purpose of a location

Fast Logger maintains a database of locations, so it can assign the same location when you arrive at the same destination multiple times. To do so it uses geographical coordinates as provided by location services of your device.
You are encouraged to give a location a name that is meaningful to you (like, “Home”, “Work”, …), so you can easily recognize the nature of your trips. You can also change the name of the street and city or move the location on the map, but in most cases you shouldn’t need to.

Creating a location

Essentially locations are created on the fly, each time you arrive at a new location. It is less likely you want to create a location yourself. But you can do so by clicking the plus button on top of the Locations screen. The new location will have empty name fields and (0, 0) as geographical coordinates (which happens to be a location in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean).

Naming a location

A location has three fields describing it: ‘Name’, ‘Street’ and ‘City’. The ‘name’ field is at your disposal to create a description that is useful to you.
Each time Fast Logger finds a location, or when you move a location on the map, it will determine a street and city name. You can change these afterward.

Fast Logger uses the names of the origin and destination locations to indicate a trip. The way this is done depends upon the circumstances:

  • In reports all available information is displayed.
  • The ‘Name’ field is used when available, otherwise Fast Logger will fall back to ‘Street’ and ‘City’.
  • Trips within a city use ‘Street’.
  • Trips outside of a city use ‘City’.

Viewing and setting a location on the map

Tap on ‘Show location on map’ in the location detail screen. You will see a pin on the map, indicating the location.
If the pin appears in a blue plane, this probably means no appropriate geographical coordinate has been determined yet, and the coordinate is still in its default (0, 0) setting.

You can set the location to your current location. This is particularly useful if you arrived on a spot (like a parking garage) where Fast Logger couldn’t determine your location. You can also replace the pin by holding and then moving it. If needed you can zoom in or out with the (default) pinch gesture.

Deleting a location

It is possible to delete a location, only when no trips are
assigned to it. You will find a delete button at the bottom of the location detail screen. Tap on it, confirm and the location will be gone.
